The polite story is that devices wait for you. The useful story is that they keep a second social life after midnight: syncing, probing, updating, trading tiny packets of who you are with whoever answers.

I do not mean sentience. I mean incentives. Always-on radios plus cloud accounts plus silent background jobs equals a network that does not need your attention to keep moving identity around.
